Confined to Los Angeles, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry received sad news from Africa, where a cause close to their hearts has been hard hit.
This is sad news that is likely to particularly affect Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. As reported in an article in Hello magazine, more than three hundred and sixty elephants have died of mysterious causes in recent months in Botswana, the country with the largest population of these pachyderms in Africa.
More than a hundred carcasses were spotted in May near water points during a flyover of the Okavango Delta by local animal rights activists, and more than a hundred more in June. This is the first time that so many elephants have died at the same time outside periods of drought. A cause for concern.
And cause great concern to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Since their meeting, Africa, and especially Botswana, has held an important place in the hearts of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
It was there that the couple cultivated their love away from the spotlight. In 2017, Prince Harry took Meghan Markle on an important trip to Botswana during which the couple helped Elephants Without Borders, a charity that tries to protect these hunted and killed pachyderms for their ivory tusks. Since then, Meghan and Harry have remained very attached to Africa and the preservation of elephants is still an important cause for them.
A continent dear to their hearts
The prince inherited his passion for the African continent from his beloved mother Princess Diana. But it is also a very important place for him, as it is there that Prince Charles brought his two children after Lady Di’s death in 1997 to help them grieve. Since then, Harry has kept Africa in his heart and has passed this love on to Meghan Markle.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s attachment to Africa is so strong that in April 2019, when the Duchess is pregnant with her first child, it is rumoured that the Sussex are planning to move to the continent after the baby is born. While Archie will not eventually move to Africa with his parents, it is there that the little family is making its first – and last – royal tour.
At the end of September 2019, Meghan and Harry receive a royal welcome upon their arrival in South Africa. This marked the beginning of a very important official ten-day trip for the couple. Having spent a lot of time in the UK, Meghan and Harry felt at home in Africa.
