Two years after the fact, the truth finally came out. In May 2018, when Meghan Markle was about to enter the British royal family on her own foot by marrying Prince Harry, tension was palpable around the future Duchess of Sussex, and serious rumours of tension with Kate Middleton – who had ended up in tears that day – had blossomed in the following weeks.
On Tuesday 26 May 2020, almost two years to the day after this royal mess, the British website The Telegraph lifts the veil on this dark episode. And the reason for the dispute is simple: Meghan and Kate got on their high horse because they disagreed over the young bridesmaids’ outfits. For if the bride naturally had her say, she wanted everything to be perfect for this day that was so important to her; Kate Middleton who saw her little Charlotte as one of the ten bridesmaids also had a strong opinion on the matter. Add to this misunderstanding the personal situations of the two young women – the Duchess of Cambridge had just given birth to Louis, and was therefore on the edge of her seat; while the Duchess of Sussex was on her side strained by the ceremony and confused with her father – and the argument could only break out.
Tights or not tights
Thus, it is indeed for a story of outfits, and more specifically whether or not the bridesmaids would wear tights, that the drama broke out. It all started during the rehearsals, the day was hot and the sun was shining high in this May in London. Kate wanted all the girls to wear what was planned, which was little dresses and pantyhose, but Meghan found it absurd to cover the girls’ legs in this heat and let it be known with her own tone. As it was her day, Meghan naturally won the day, but, probably as offended by this newcomer to the monarchy as she was by her skin-deep sensitivity at the time, Kate literally burst into tears.
Thankfully, the dispute and its aftermath are now only a bad memory, and although Meghan Markle left the monarchy two months ago for other adventures across the Atlantic, Kate Middleton is still loyal to the post, with all the dignity that the future Queen Consort now knows how to show.
