Meghan Markle recounts her friendship with Sophie Grégoire in her podcast Archetypes, broadcast in November 2022. Although she no longer lives in Canada, the Duchess of Sussex has reportedly remained close to Justin Trudeau’s wife, with whom she could play an important role following the announcement of her separation after 18 years of marriage.

The announcement came on Wednesday 2 August: Justin Trudeau and Sophie Grégoire are separating. While the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office said in a press release that the couple were “not getting divorced”, the parents of Xavier (15), Ella-Grace (14) and Hadrien (9) “have ensured that all legal and ethical steps regarding their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to be taken in the future”. To cope with this stage, the Daily Mail reports that Sophie Grégoire could turn “to her close friends”, in particular Meghan Markle.

As the British media outlet points out, Justin Trudeau’s wife and the Duchess of Sussex became “fast friends” when the former actress moved to Canada with Prince Harry after leaving royal duties. Although the Sussex couple now live in Montecito (California, USA), Meghan Markle and Sophie Grégoire have reportedly stayed in touch and their friendship has even “strengthened”. The former invited the latter to take part in her podcast Archetypes, in November 2022. In her introduction, Archie and Lilibet’s mum introduced her as “a very dear friend” she had met in Toronto during the filming of Suits.

She says that “Soph”, as she calls her, “used to send [her] little meditations during [her] pregnancy” and “encouraging” voice notes. It seems that ever since they met, Meghan Markle has made a habit of asking him for advice. Omid Scobie, author of the controversial book about the Sussexes, Finding Freedom, recounts that in the summer of 2022, Archie and Lilibet’s mum organised “a pool party for Mrs Trudeau”. Meghan Markle, meanwhile, recounts a day spent “on the terrace” of her mansion.

“It wasn’t our day as wives and mothers, all perfectly coiffed, beaded and smiling. It was the other version of the two of us, with curly hair, swimming costumes, household linen and huge bursts of laughter,” she laughs. “We gave our children big hugs, we whispered girl talk on the terrace, giddy like real schoolgirls. We had so much fun.
