Since the Megxit in 2020, relations between the British Royal Family and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been strained. Notwithstanding these tensions, Prince Harry has confirmed his attendance at the coronation of Charles III on 6 May. He will attend the ceremony alone, leaving Archie and Lilibet in California. However, these two toddlers could be the key to a rapprochement between the Windsors and the Sussexes.

In an interview with the Express.co.uk on Wednesday 19 April, royal biographer Andrew Lownie said that “the children could be part of a rapprochement”. The author of the book Traitor King: The Scandalous Exile of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor said “the door is open to them and one day it could happen”. Archie and Lilibet have not been back on British soil since Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee on 2 June.

A certain disappointment

Their absence from their grandfather’s coronation would be a heartbreaker for him. A source close to Buckingham Palace told The Sun on 12 April that the monarch would feel “some disappointment” on 6 May. However, the insider said that despite his sadness, “the King understands the situation”. Indeed, the date of the coronation coincides with Archie’s fourth birthday.

However, this reason would not be the only one… For Ingrid Seward, editor of Majesty magazine, Meghan Markle would not like to be “humiliated” by the royal family again. “The disgrace of being excluded from the Buckingham Palace balcony queue was more than she could bear,” the British monarchy expert assured.
