As the High Court of Justice in London rules on the case between Meghan Markle and Associated Newspapers Limited, Thomas Markle has come to the rescue. The Duchess’s father gave damning testimony about his daughter.
The battle between Meghan Markle and her father, Thomas Markle, has resumed. The first day of hearings at the High Court of Justice in London opened on January 19 to determine whether the case between the Duchess of Sussex and Associated Newspapers Limited could be tried under the principle of “summary judgement”, in other words, a quick judgment without going to trial.
As a reminder, Prince Harry’s wife accuses the publishing company of the Mail on Sunday of having disclosed in February 2019 extracts from a private letter written to her father a few months earlier. Among the witnesses in the High Court of Justice was Thomas Markle, ready to fight with his daughter from the United States.
For the man who himself passed on the information to the British tabloid believes that his daughter is playing a double game. “The letter (which she sent me) did not say that she loved me. It did not show any concern that I had suffered a heart attack and it did not ask me any questions about my health,” he told Judge Mark Warby, the judge in charge of the case, in a testimony given last March.
The former cinematographer apparently resented the fact that five of his daughter’s friends denigrated him in an article published in People in February 2019. “When I read the article ‘The Truth about Meghan’ in People magazine, I was shocked by what he said about me. It was a big lie,” he continued in his testimony.

“This distorted the tone and content of the letter Meg wrote to me in August 2018. I quickly decided that I wanted to correct this misrepresentation,” Thomas Markle told the judge. While Meghan Markle’s lawyers described the famous letter as “a sincere plea from an anguished daughter to her father,” the Duchess’s father said otherwise. “The letter was not an attempt at reconciliation. It was a criticism of me,” he defended himself. “It actually marked the end of our relationship, in no way a reconciliation.”
So, according to Thomas Markle, his daughter would never have reached out to him to try to repair their relationship. Worse, she would have forced her friends to testify on her behalf, contrary to rumours about her difficult character.
“It seemed to me that she had had to use her friends to pass on information to the press, information that she wanted to publish, including information about the letter she had obviously told them she had written,” Thomas Markle continued. Contrary to what some media outlets have reported, the former Emmy Award-winning cinematographer reportedly tried to contact his daughter several times after her marriage to Prince Harry in May 2018.
Violation of privacy
“Until I read the People magazine article, I never intended to speak publicly about Meg’s letter,” assured Thomas Markle, who would never have received payment for sending the letter to the Mail on Sunday. Meghan Markle’s lawyers, for their part, claim that the publication of the famous letter constitutes an invasion of their client’s privacy, and more specifically a “misuse of private information”. However, Thomas Markle’s damning testimony should in no way improve his daughter’s business, as she would like to avoid a trial, particularly in order to avoid incurring significant legal costs.
