Meghan Markle: This decisive hearing for the peace of her couple

Two days of hearings will begin on 19 January, during which the High Court of Justice will determine whether the case between Meghan Markle and ANL can be tried quickly.

New step in the case between Meghan Markle and Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL). The first day of hearings that could avert a trial between the Duchess of Sussex and the publishers of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday begins on 19 January 2021.

As a reminder, the wife of Prince Harry reproaches the second tabloid for having disclosed extracts from a private letter written to her father, Thomas Markle, in August 2018. Since then, the two sides have been in a constant battle. Although the trial was due to begin in early 2021, it had been postponed to the autumn for a “confidential” reason.

The High Court of Justice, through Judge Mark Warby, must now determine within the next two days whether the case can be tried under the summary judgement system, i.e. a speedy judgment without going to trial. A bias that could suit both plaintiffs and defendants.

However, frustration is beginning to emerge at ANL. Indeed, according to Liz Harley, the head of the press group, the multiple postponements could jeopardize the testimony of Thomas Markle, who is in fragile health, as she reported on the Daily Mail.

Expensive legal action

Despite the many vicissitudes, the tabloid still claims the right to publish this letter. For her part, Meghan Markle accuses the press group of invading her privacy. She has filed a complaint for “misuse of private information”, “breach of the European General Data Protection Regulations and the UK Data Protection Act” and for “copyright infringement”.

Meghan Markle is highly motivated and seems ready to fight. However, there is a problem: legal action is costing her a lot of money. A difficulty that could force her to make… some concessions.
