A few hours after the surprise announcement of Meghan Markle’s pregnancy, the silence of Kate Middleton and Prince William was resounding. Between the Sussex husbands and the Cambridge husbands, there still seems to be a long way to go to renew the broken bonds.
Some of the silences are particularly deafening. While Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced that they were expecting their second child, almost two years after the birth of their little Archie, Kate Middleton and Prince William did not see fit to react publicly, as is often the case during major announcements within the royal family.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace wrote: “His Majesty, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles and the rest of the family are delighted and wish them well”. An odd formulation, since the Cambridge spouses, although front-line members of the Crown, are not explicitly mentioned.
Nor have Kate Middleton and Prince William appeared on their official Instagram page, on which they are very active. Having been on the outskirts of the monarchy since Sussex decided to slam the door on it a year ago, Prince Harry and Prince William have in recent months been trying to rebuild a fragile relationship, particularly in the memory of their mother. However, the two brothers cannot deny that the ties are indeed broken, as they have not seen each other for several months and now live completely separate lives.
The Fab Four a complex story
If Queen Elizabeth II would have dreamed of a perfect understanding between those whom the British press nicknamed the Fab Four, the current never passed between the two couples, who never managed to find their rhythm. Crown aficionados still remember the icy atmosphere in Westminster Abbey last March, during the last group appearance of the Sussex and Cambridge .
Now exiled in Los Angeles, the Sussex couple are living their lives as they see fit, having notified the Queen of Meghan Markle’s pregnancy only shortly before the official announcement…
