It’s official: the British crown has a new royal baby! An unprecedented event for the royal family, as Meghan and Harry’s daughter is the first mixed-race heiress but also the first not to be born in London.
This Friday, June 4, Meghan and Harry welcomed their second child, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, little sister of Archie (2 years). Barely born, the royal baby has already marked the history of British royalty. Indeed, the great-granddaughter of Elizabeth II is the first mixed-race heir to the British crown, her mother being of African-American origin. “Lili” is also the first heiress not to be born in London. Prince Harry’s wife gave birth at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California, where the couple has lived since they left the English capital.
If his brother, Archie, is also mixed race, he was indeed born in London, on May 6, 2019, at Portland Hospital in London. “Harry and Meghan have made history in almost everything they have done as no one in the royal family has ever done before, so it seems appropriate that their future daughter continues on this path, breaking down barriers,” analyzed a fine connoisseur of the royal family to Best Life, last May.
The little Lilibet Diana, named after Harry’s mother and grandmother, will automatically obtain American citizenship. Her father being British, the little girl will also have dual British nationality, according to The Independent. However, she might not get the title of “Lady” but simply “Miss”. Archie also has a dual American-British nationality, as her mother is American, born in Los Angeles.

Will Meghan Markle get British citizenship? The answer is no: the Duchess of Sussex had indeed applied, after her marriage to Harry, but the 39-year-old actress would not meet the conditions required by the British Home Office. William’s sister-in-law would have had to stay in the UK for more than 270 days, until the fall of 2020, while she returned to the American west coast in March 2020.

Lili is not the first member of the British Royal Family to be born stateside. Maud Windsor, 51st in line to the throne and the eldest child of Lord Frederick Windsor and his actress wife Sophie Winkleman, was born in Los Angeles in 2013.
