On the set of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Rebel Wilson confided on her first meeting with Meghan Markle, with an anecdote received in a mixed way by Internet users.
The wife of Prince Harry did not make a good impression for her first meeting with a famous Australian comedian. On the set of Andy Cohen’s show Watch What Happens Live, Rebel Wilson and John Oliver came to discuss the latest celebrity news with their host. Andy Cohen then asked the Pitch Perfect actress about her behind-the-scenes conversations with the screenwriter, and the latter recounted her first meeting with Meghan and Harry in Santa Barbara, California: “Meghan wasn’t so naturally warm,” she quipped before comparing her attitude to that of her husband, Harry. “He couldn’t have been nicer.”
The 43-year-old actress then took the Duchess of Sussex’s side in trying to understand why the latter was distant. “Meghan wasn’t as naturally warm, but maybe my mom being Australian, made some requests of her that were a little too rude like, ‘Where are your kids?” she explained. Rebel Wilson even tried to slow down her mother’s enthusiasm by begging her not to ask such questions. True to her DNA, Rebel Wilson played it down by joking about the scene, “She probably thought, ‘Who the hell are these boring, doomed people from Australia?'” A reference to the history of the country that housed convicts exiled from Britain between 1788 and 1868.
Mixed reactions on social networks
As noted by the site of Page Six, social networks have not known how to welcome these comments. Indeed, despite the controversy, Meghan Markle is supported by a large community of fans. Under the Twitter post of the show dedicated to the statements of Rebel Wilson, the comments poured in. When one Internet user defended the Australian actress, saying that there was no reason to be rude in the face of a “loving question”, another stood up against it and reminded that “Harry and Meghan’s children are not objects of exhibition”, before concluding that he expected better from the actress: “I am sad and disappointed.”
This isn’t the first time Rebel Wilson has mocked the royal couple. While presenting the BAFTAs in March 2022, the actress had not hesitated to mock Harry and Meghan’s interview to Oprah Winfrey: “From drama to horror to fantasy… Harry and Meghan’s interview with Oprah had it all. Unfortunately, it’s not nominated in this category (Best British Film, ed.) but many incredible films are.” The comedienne’s humor has never lacked pizzazz.
