It is a departure that does not pass. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry decided to withdraw from the British Royal Family and leave the United Kingdom to head off to the United States. A decision that Prince Philip does not digest.
According to Ingrid Seward, author of the book Prince Philip Revealed, the Queen’s husband is “dismayed and deeply upset” by the Megxit as reported by our colleagues in the Daily Mail. The man who gave up his naval career for the crown when Elizabeth II ascended the throne in 1952, and has since agreed to always walk two steps behind her, is “unable to understand” their flight. “The behavior of her grandson is completely foreign to her, so the relationship suffered naturally,” the royal biography points out.
According to the royal biographer, Prince Philip liked Meghan Markle when she joined the royal family, even ignoring her health concerns to attend their wedding in May 2018. But their relationship has deteriorated dramatically since then.
The Duke of Edinburgh even now goes so far as to compare the Duchess of Sussex to Wallis Simpson. A terrible parallel when one remembers how much the latter had shaken the crown, Edward VIII abdicating out of love for her in 1936.
A very dark period for the British monarchy. George VI had had to ascend the throne, also upsetting the fate of his eldest daughter Lilibeth. Wallis Simpson and Meghan Markle, both divorced Americans, turned their prince’s head. But the comparison ends there.
Prince Harry will never be king and the consequences of his departure to the United States, even if they are complicated to manage, prove to be much less disastrous for the crown.
