Princess Diana has shown time and again that she doesn’t care about protocol. Especially when it came to pleasing her children and sneaking off with them for a McDonald’s dinner!
For her two sons William and Harry, the Princess of Wales Lady Diana was a present, invested, protective mother. More than anything else, she wanted to give her children a normal childhood.
Even if it meant shocking the staff at Buckingham! Darren McGrady, who was the palace’s chef at the time, remembers the Princess’s frequent escapades…to McDonald’s. “I remember the Princess came into the kitchen one day and said, ‘Cancel lunch for the boys, we’re going to McDonald’s,'” he told the Marie Claire newspaper.
It was a real insult to the chef who had tried to change her mind. “I said, ‘Oh my God, Your Royal Highness, I can do it, I can make hamburgers,'” he recalled. But in reality, the cook would have been hard pressed to replace a fast-food employee, and with good reason: “She said, ‘No, no, this is the toy they want,'” he said. Two little boys really like all the others who wouldn’t have had to give up the toy from their children’s menu for anything in the world!
“Yeah, the boys loved McDonald’s, eating pizza and tasting skinny potatoes – a kind of American specialty. They were royal princes but had children’s palates,” added Darren McGrady.
And that McDonald’s escapade was apparently far from being an exception, as former Princess Paul Burell’s butler told the Mirror: “All three of them would go to McDonald’s for a Big Mac and fries before coming back to watch Blind Date.
Then they’d slump down on this huge stuffed hippo that Diana had in her living room.” Memories that must still be very dear to the hearts of the two princes.
