he marriage of Kate Middleton and Prince William has not yet revealed all its secrets. In an interview with Classic FM radio, Prince Charles reveals his unexpected involvement in the ceremony.
TWhat if, more than nine years later, Kate Middleton and Prince William’s wedding still holds some surprises in store for us? On April 29th, the Duchess and the Duke of Cambridge were united in great pomp before the cameras of the world. But it seems that the event has not yet revealed all its secrets, as Prince Charles confided on British radio Classic FM, in an exceptional two-part programme broadcast on 25 and 26 May. The eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II, a great lover of classical music, put his passion for her son’s wedding to good use.
“I love to prepare music, which I hope will be interesting for certain occasions… especially for weddings, if people wish,” the Prince of Wales told star journalist Alan Titchmarsh. “I know that my eldest son was very understanding and even perfectly happy when I suggested a few songs for his wedding. I hope it made some people happy. It’s kind of fun to have orchestras for big occasions like this. So, why not suggest a few songs from time to time? Anyway… I like it.”
A passion for music that goes back to childhood.
Johann Sebastian Bach, Edward Elgar, Frederick Delius, Benjamin Britten… are all composers whose scores were played at Kate and William’s wedding. Which ones were chosen by Prince Charles? Mystery and gumdrop for the moment. The fact remains that Diana’s ex-husband’s passion for classical music seems to go back to childhood, as he explained on Classic FM. “My grandmother (the Queen Mother – Editor’s note) played a lot of music,” he said. “I think I became aware (of my interest in music) when (she) took me to Covent Garden at the age of seven. It must have been in 1956 to see the Bolshoi ballet performance. It was their first visit to the UK and I will never forget this incredible opportunity. I was completely inspired by it.” An enthusiasm that has stayed with him for over 60 years.
