Harry and Meghan: this chilly reception could be in store for them this Christmas

On Sunday 24 December 2023, many families will gather together on Christmas Eve. If Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were invited to the UK for the festive season, they could receive a frosty welcome, according to sources. Could a warm reunion be on the cards? While Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expecting an apology from the British royal family, they are reportedly ready to celebrate the festive season at Sandringham. “I can’t imagine the Sussexes would turn down an invitation to spend time with Her Majesty. So far, there have been no invitations for the holidays,” said a source. Friends of the Sussexes assured the Sunday Times that they would be prepared to make peace. “It looks like they are really stepping up their efforts in their reconciliation strategy,” a source told The Times.

In full disclosure, this source added: “It’s so bizarre to have behaved so badly, to have demanded an apology and an admission of ‘guilt’ – to no avail, I might add – from the family and now to suggest that they will simply go home and allow the past to be put behind them, if only someone would do well to invite them.” According to the insider, Archie and Lilibet’s parents had received invitations to join the royal family at Balmoral, but never accepted. “Which begs the question: why now? Is it something to do with the fact that some of their business deals, like Spotify, have fallen through and they’ve been ridiculed in the US on shows like South Park and Family Guy?” this insider wondered, before adding, “Could it be that they’ve realised that they’ve been complaining about how awful it is to be a member of the Royal Family and that it might not be such a good strategy after all?”

Harry and Meghan, back in Scotland soon?

The source noted, however, that the invitation might not go down well with other members of the royal family, including Prince William. Indeed, his relationship with his brother is still not at its best. So the Prince of Wales might prefer to celebrate Christmas with Kate Middleton’s family to avoid her. Another royal insider, meanwhile, suggested that Charles III could invite Harry and Meghan to visit him in Scotland in the New Year, when William and Kate will be at Anmer Hill. “This would certainly have the advantage of killing two birds with one stone; extending an olive branch to one son without causing difficulties for the other,” he was quoted as saying.
