On Sunday, April 5, Queen Elizabeth II addressed her subjects in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, thanking them for their efforts during this pandemic crisis. During this address, Her Majesty chose to wear a symbolic brooch, which belonged to her grandmother, Queen Mary.

A historic moment. On Sunday, April 5, Queen Elizabeth addressed the British in a special address recorded at Windsor Castle, where she is currently confined with Prince Philip. In 68 years of reign, she has addressed the nation only three times. During this speech, Her Majesty wished to thank her people for their efforts at this time of crisis related to the pandemic and to deliver a message of hope.Following the Megxit, she also gave a subtle nod to Meghan and Harry. While her speech was followed very closely by the British (and not only), another detail caught the viewers’ attention.

For this historic address, the Queen, as always, looked her best in a green dress. She chose to accessorize it with a pearl necklace and a diamond brooch. If one suspects that she has a multitude of brooches, each one more sumptuous than the other, the one that was selected this Sunday, April 5, is not due to chance. This jewel has historical, even symbolic significance, since it belonged to her grandmother, Queen Mary, as reported in The Mirror.

A brooch given to Queen Mary on her wedding day
This brooch with a central turquoise stone and diamonds was presented to Her Majesty’s grandmother on her wedding day with the Duke of York in 1893. The Queen Mary Turquoise and Diamond Brooch is a gift from her in-laws, the Prince and Princess of Wales, future King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Queen Elizabeth inherited this jewel upon the death of her grandmother in 1953. Since then, Prince Philip’s wife has worn it publicly on several occasions. After wearing it for the first time on one of her outfits in 2014, Queen Elizabeth II stopped wearing it in August 2019 at a craft sale held in a church near her castle in Balmoral.
