Like many Americans, Meghan Markle would have gone to the polls to choose the new president of the United States. A vote during the American presidential elections of this Tuesday, November 3 going against the royal protocol.
Did Meghan Markle violate again the policy of the British royal family? While the American presidential elections took place on Tuesday, November 3, the Mirror reports that the Duchess of Sussex was impatient to vote, according to some sources.
She is said to have expressed her choice of the future president of the United States in advance by voting by mail, a preferred method during this election which is being held in the midst of a global pandemic. But this gesture may well displease the United Kingdom.
While she had begun to take steps to obtain British nationality after her marriage to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle finally abandoned this naturalization project. Archie’s mother is still an American citizen, and voting for its president is her inalienable right.
However, by going to the ballot box, Harry’s wife again breaks the royal protocol. It is a tradition that members of the English crown must be politically neutral. This is a rule that Queen Elizabeth II is particularly fond of. Thus, while members of the monarchy have the legal right to vote, by convention they never speak at the polls. Prince Harry never voted.
Making his voice and his vote heard
By choosing to leave the British Royal Family, however, Meghan Markle broke certain rules imposed by the Crown. The Duchess of Sussex is no longer an active member of the monarchy and intends to take advantage of this newfound freedom of expression to make her voice heard, after having been forced to silence her opinions for so long.
Militant at heart, the wife of Prince Harry has been involved in the political arena since the couple settled in the United States. A source confided to Page Six: “Meghan was an American long before she became a member of the royal family. She wouldn’t have missed voting in this election for anything in the world, no matter where she was living at the time.
Interviewed by Marie Claire US magazine in August, Meghan Markle proudly stated her intention to vote in this presidential election: “I know what it’s like to have a voice and I also know the feeling of being deprived of it”.
The Duchess also urged Americans to exercise their right to vote in a video message for Time 100 released Tuesday, September 22, explaining that it was “the most important election of our lives. This right Meghan Markle herself chose to exercise it, probably depositing in the ballot box a ballot for Joe Biden, she who clearly opposed Donald Trump. And by expressing her voice, the Duchess made history, as it seems to be the first time that a crowned head has voted in an election.
