In an interview with The Daily Beast on Friday 2 June, a friend of Elizabeth II revealed that Prince Harry had “betrayed” the Queen. The Duke of Sussex, who has had a string of projects in which he has revealed family secrets, is even said to have “hurt” her.

Prince Harry’s many media appearances and controversial speeches have not made him any friends. Indeed, the Duke of Sussex, who chose to recount his career and reveal many family secrets in his Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan, and then in his memoirs, The Substitute, has aroused the anger of many observers, as well as some close friends. This is particularly true of a friend of Queen Elizabeth II, who spoke to the British media outlet The Daily Beast on Friday 2 June. In particular, the source revealed that Her Majesty, who was already “dying”, was hurt by the plans of her grandson and his partner, Meghan Markle.

“It was time for Harry and Meghan to bite their tongues. Instead, they produced an endless stream of incredibly hurtful films and interviews, attacking her life’s work,” the caller lamented, before continuing, “Harry announced he was writing a memoir when his grandmother had not only recently been widowed, but was herself dying, as he must have known. Well, the cruelty of it is breathtaking.”

“Nothing will assuage the anger and disgust”

During the exchange, Elizabeth II’s friend also reacted to an article in The Sun, published on Thursday 1 June, in which a source close to the Sussexes claimed that the couple no longer wanted to talk publicly about the intimacy of the royal family. According to the Daily Beast’s source, the damage has already been done. “The idea that they are now going to take a vow of silence after all the damage they have caused, even if [the report] were true, which I very much doubt, will do nothing to assuage the anger and disgust that some of her friends feel about what they have done to the Queen in her final years,” he concluded.
