By announcing their retirement from royal duties in 2020 and moving to California, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have opened hostilities with the royal family. Biographer Tom Bower noted in his book Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors that a scalded Camilla had given Meghan a prickly nickname.
It has now been three years since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry caused a cataclysm within the royal family, by freeing themselves from their royal duties. Far from pleasing Queen Elizabeth II, who was still alive at the time, Charles III, the prince’s father, and the latter’s brother, William, their shock decision was accompanied by a quick move across the Atlantic.
After a few months spent in Canada at the height of the pandemic, the Sussexes finally bought a luxurious villa in Montecito, not far from Santa Barbara, California. Since these events and the recent publication of the Prince’s resounding memoirs, relations between Archie and Lilibet’s parents and the rest of the Windsors seem to be at a standstill. Proof is this nickname that Camilla had given to Meghan at that time …
According to The Express, which quotes Tom Bower, author of the biography Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors, published in 2022, Camilla would have called Meghan “minx” (understand “pimple” or “brat”) once the Sussexes flew to the United States. She meant by this nickname that the former actress was a “woman who is not afraid of the eyes, seductive and manipulative”. The author says that the new queen consort, who as a rule is “silent” about Meghan, could not help but be “suspicious” of the wife of her son-in-law and this since the beginning of their story in 2016. “She found it hard to believe that Meghan would sacrifice her acting career and independence to meekly serve the monarchy as a dedicated team member.”
Strained relationship between Camilla and the Sussexes
In his memoirs called Spare (The Substitute in French), released last January, Prince Harry has several times taken his mother-in-law as a target. He revealed that his wife had tried to create a link with Camilla, in vain. The former rival of Lady Diana had argued that she had also, in her time, had to take on the role of the “bad guy”. “But what did that mean? That now it was Meg’s turn,” Harry noted in his autobiography. Determined to keep the Sussexes out of power at all costs, Camilla even made a dubious proposal to Meghan: “Camilla had also suggested to Meg that I become Governor General of Bermuda (…) Well, well, I thought. And one of the collateral benefits of her plan was to make us disappear from the scene. It remains to be seen if Meghan and Harry will go to Charles’ coronation on May 6… the atmosphere promises to be electric!
