A Save on Energy report, recently quoted in the tabloid The Mirror, revealed who of Prince Charles, Prince Harry, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle was the greenest member of the royal family.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are equally committed to anti-racism, global warming and environmental conservation. But if the latter cause is close to their hearts, it would appear to be a variable geometry.
Indeed, on Thursday 8 October, the British tabloid The Mirror revealed a report by the company Save Energy. According to the report, which uses a points-based rating system, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are the least environmentally friendly members of the royal family, placing them ninth in the ranking drawn up by Save Energy.
They scored a total of nine points, just behind Princess Anne (ten points). A rating based on the number of trips, the number of environmental charities supported by the crowned heads, their participation in environmental events, the degree of sustainability of their wardrobes, the number of publications on social networks about environmental issues and the use of electric cars.
While Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were able to score points thanks to their electric cars, the Duchess of Sussex’s passion for big brands and Sussex’s lack of commitment to environmental charities between March 2019 and 2020 “hinders their score” according to the ranking.
“They also had the third worst carbon footprint of any member of the royal family.” As for the other members of the Windsor-Mountbatten clan: while Prince William scored 15 points (due to his travel footprint), Kate Middleton managed to score 29 points and climbed to fourth place in the ranking ahead of Her Majesty Elizabeth II. However, the title of most environmentally friendly member of the Firm went to Prince Charles, with a total of 156 points.
The king of the green
Future King of England, Prince Charles is therefore also the king of the green. But how did he manage to get ahead of his two sons and daughters-in-law? The answer is simple: for more than 30 years, the Prince of Wales has been a champion of the green revolution, denouncing as early as 1970 “the horrifying effects of pollution in all its forms”.
Mobilised and a fan of all things organic, the father of Prince Harry and Prince William even took an active part in COP21 (the World Climate Conference in Paris) in 2015, where he delivered a hard-hitting speech on global warming. It remains to be seen whether his children, Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, might one day follow in his footsteps.
