GROWING UP METIS HAS NOT BEEN EASY.
The origins of Duchess Meghan, whose mother is black and father white, were criticized when her relationship with Prince Harry was formalized. Unfortunately, it was not the first time she had faced this kind of prejudice. In Elle, she referred to a form she had to fill out at school to indicate her ethnicity. “You could only choose one box, but it was like choosing one half of myself over the other,” she wrote. I put down my pen. Not as an act of defiance, but rather to show my confusion. I left that box on my identity blank, and that’s how I felt.”
Later, she described the difficulty she had in getting roles. “I wasn’t black enough for black roles and not white enough for white roles,” she said. But she eventually made peace with her origins. “Although my mixed heritage created a grey area around my self-identification, leaving me one foot on either side of the fence, I came to accept it,” she writes. I like to say who I am, share where I come from, express my pride in being a strong and confident Métis woman.”
