Meghan Markle and Harry take 20 weeks of parental leave for Lilibet Diana

To take care of their little Lilibet Diana, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have decided to take a five-month parental leave. The couple does not want to miss anything of the first moments of their daughter’s life.

This Friday, June 3, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcomed their second child, a little girl named Lilibet Diana. This name is a tribute to Queen Elizabeth who is nicknamed Lilibet by her entourage, and also to Princess Diana, who died in 1997 in a terrible road accident in Paris. To take care of the little beauty, the Sussexes decided to take 20 weeks of parental leave, or five months, as reported by the DailyMail. Royalty reporter Omid Scobie told Good Morning America, “We’re used to seeing royals go back to work, but Harry and Meghan are going to give themselves 20 weeks of parental leave.”

By taking this great leave, Meghan and Harry are once again marking their difference from Kate and William. The future king of England had granted himself nearly three weeks of leave for his children George and Charlotte, but only two days for the youngest, Louis. Kate, on the other hand, took a month off after the birth of her first child, four months after the birth of her second child, and seven months after the birth of her last child.

Can Lilibet Diana reconcile the Sussexes with the Queen?

For several months now, relations have been strained between Meghan and Harry and the rest of the royal family. The Sussexes’ shock interview with Oprah Winfrey last March did not help. Yet, by choosing to call their daughter Lilibet Diana, the couple seems to be reaching out to Queen Elizabeth II.

According to the DailyMail, Her Majesty was “surprised” that the Sussexes decided to use her nickname. Indeed, Harry had told his grandmother that they could give his name to their daughter, but had not asked permission in advance. Enough to ease tensions? “I do not know if it will be able to ring the peace, but it shows how close they are to the queen,” estimated Omid Scobie in the American program.
