The Sussex are at the heart of a new scandal, accused of trying to influence the American vote in the next presidential election. A member of Congress has therefore simply asked the British ambassador to the United States to strip them of their royal titles.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were hoping for a quiet life in Los Angeles. A serene life with their son Archie, away from the spotlight and criticism. But polemics catch up with them, inexorably. In the latest scandal, Congressman Jason Smith sent Karen Pierce, the British ambassador to the United States, a letter asking her to strip Sussex of its royal titles.7
“I respectfully ask the British Government to ensure that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex no longer attempt to interfere with our election or that they be stripped of all titles, styles and privileges they currently retain,” writes the US Congressman.
Elected Republican from Missouri to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013, Jason Smith is a strong supporter of Donald Trump. And he believes that Meghan Markle is trying to influence the next presidential election by calling for a massive turnout at the polls. While the young woman has never officially incited people to vote for Joe Biden, her sympathies for the Democratic candidate are well known.
Sussex political neutrality in question
“As you know, the British Royal Family has long observed a policy of strict political neutrality. I am therefore concerned by the recent comments of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex regarding the United States presidential election, particularly in light of international conversations surrounding foreign interference in our elections and the Duke’s status as a guest of the United States,” writes Jason Smith.
For the politician, the problem is obvious. The vagueness of the Sussex’s position within the royal family is such that it becomes impossible to separate what they say in their personal capacity from their official position within the British monarchy.
When Sussex appeared on ABC on 22 September as part of Time Magazine’s first televised edition of its Top 100 Most Influential People of the Year, it called for “rejecting hate speech, misinformation and online negativity”, with Meghan Markle saying it was “the most important election of our lives”. A thinly veiled attack on US President Donald Trump.
