Meghan Markle: Why she won’t finally be able to acquire British citizenship

0

After marrying Prince Harry in May 2018, Meghan Markle wanted to become a British citizen. Only now, it would be too late for the duchess…

It has been a year since Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle left the British Royal Family. To the amazement of the whole world, the son of Princess Diana and the former American actress decided to distance themselves from the royal palaces and the monarchy.

Now, the couple and their one and a half year old son Archie live in Montecito, California, they are closer than ever and have no regrets about their life before.

Although she has shared Prince Harry’s life for the past four years, Meghan Markle has officially missed her chance to become a British citizen. According to information in the Daily Mail, the Duchess of Sussex had every intention of becoming British and had even started the process after marrying Prince Harry in May 2018.

The process, quite cumbersome it must be said, required Meghan Markle to reside in the United Kingdom for at least three years after her union with the young prince.

Too late for Meghan Markle

And that’s not all. According to the strict rules of the British Home Office, Meghan Markle was not to have spent more than 270 days outside the United Kingdom in those three years, including no more than 90 days in the last year. If at the time, Kensington Palace had confirmed that Meghan Markle intended to start her procedure, with the Megxit the situation changed.

The Duchess did not comply with the legislation, as she has been living in North America since the beginning of 2020. If she really wants to acquire British nationality, she will therefore have to reapply and return to live in the United Kingdom . Which seems very unlikely.
