While relations between Prince Harry and his father are not currently at their best, Meghan Markle’s husband has nevertheless just signed an agreement with King Charles III, which will allow him to make significant savings.

Since they made the decision to leave the British royal family, and more globally the United Kingdom, to move to California with their children, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle maintain a more than tense relationship with the Windsor clan. It must be said that the couple never misses an opportunity to openly criticize the behavior of the British royal family towards them, when they were still living in England. For the record, shortly after their wedding, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had moved to the side of Frogmore Cottage.

While they initially had to pay a “commercial rate” when they moved into this residence in 2019, the couple just reached an agreement with King Charles III, which allowed them to save a lot of money, as reported by the Daily Mail. Specifically, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex repaid £ 2.4 million, or 2.72 million euros, which came from British taxpayers’ money. This large sum had been used to renovate Frogmore Cottage, when they moved to California in 2020. As a reminder, the rental value of this property is estimated at between £150,000 and £230,000 per year, which means that the Sussexes have potentially saved £690,000 over the past three years, or nearly €800,000.

Harry and Meghan: a Buckingham Palace spokesperson confirms their agreement about Frogmore Cottage

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex contributed £2.4 million to the sovereign grant that covered the renovation of Frogmore Cottage. They have fulfilled their financial obligations to the property. In accordance with standard practice for the Sovereign Grant report, the accounting treatment was reviewed and approved by the National Audit Office and the Treasury. As with any such landlord-tenant agreement, further details of the Sussex tenancy arrangements would be a private matter,” a Buckingham Palace spokesman was quoted in the Daily Mail.
