Netflix drops production of Meghan Markle’s animated series

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex teamed up with David Furnish, husband of Sir Elton John, and a host of other Hollywood bigwigs to develop an animated series about the adventures of a young teenager named Pearl. The series was to be produced thanks to the lucrative contract signed between Netfix and Archewell, the company of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The recent poor results of the platform have forced Netflix to make some decisions, such as abandoning the project being produced by the production company of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The Pearl series abandoned in full production

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are currently producing Heart of Invictus, a series that follows veterans at the Invictus Games in 2022. As part of their partnership with the streaming platform Netflix, the couple had announced a second series project, which this time was very close to the Duchess of Sussex.

It is still via Archewell, the company of the couple, that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex worked on the creation of an animated series for children. Archewell is now divided into three departments: Archewell Foundation, which manages the charitable part of the Sussexes’ activities, Archewell Productions, which produces documentaries and content mainly for Netflix, and Archewell Audio, which produces podcasts for the Sussexes’ Spotify channel.

The Pearl series was to be an animated series that focused on the heroic adventures of a 12-year-old girl, whose character was inspired by influential women in history. “Like many girls her age, our heroine Pearl is on a quest to find herself as she tries to overcome life’s daily challenges,” said the Duchess of Sussex in the release announcing the project.

In addition to producing the episodes, Meghan Markle was executive producer of Pearl. She shared this role with filmmakers and other well-known TV show producers, such as David Furnish. The Canadian is best known for being the husband of Sir Elton John.

This May 1, Deadline reports that Netflix has just halted production on the Pearl series. “Netflix has quietly dropped Pearl, the working title of an animated series created by Meghan Markle via Archewell Production. Netflix crossed two other animated children’s series off its project list last week that were in production. “Clearly, Netflix’s excessively high content spend is being reevaluated,” Deadline explains.

The abandonment of Pearl’s production comes days after the announcement that sent Netflix’s stock plunging on the stock market. Poor results, due to a decline in subscriptions, caused the stock to fall. With worried investors and increasing competitive pressure, the company is looking to save money and invest in new areas, such as video games.
